How to travel to Port Elizabeth
South Africa’s ‘wild’ province, the Eastern Cape features expanses of untouched beach, bush and forest. This was Nelson Mandela’s home province, and is an area with some enticing attractions – among them the Addo Elephant National Park, with the densest elephant population in the world; the dramatic Wild Coast; and, of course, Mandela’s home at Qunu.
Port Elizabeth Airport is located just a few kilometres out of the city centre and has regular flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other South African airports.
All PE flights land at Port Elizabeth Airport (code PLZ). Known as the 10 minute airport because of its close proximity to Humewood Beach and the rest of the city, it’s great knowing you’ll never have too far to drive after landing if you’re staying in or around the city. There are no international flights in or out of Port Elizabeth Airport but you’ll always be able to connect to overseas destinations via Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Port Elizabeth is South Africa’s fifth largest city and as such you won’t battle to find domestic flights to PE anytime of the week. Kulula and Mango are your low cost carriers offering PE flights, while SAA and British Airways Comair have you covered if you prefer the comforts of a full service airline in South Africa.
PORT ELIZABETH: GATEWAY TO THE EASTERN CAPE
Port Elizabeth has three nicknames: the friendly city, the windy city (thanks to the South Easter that blows along the Algoa Bay coastline) and Nelson Mandela Bay, in commemoration of the city’s proud association with the world renowned humanitarian and freedom fighter.
Located at the southern tip of Africa, 34 degrees south of the equator, Port Elizabeth enjoys a sunny climate throughout the year. Temperatures in the summer months range from 16-26 degrees Celsius. This moderate climate and Algoa Bay’s 40km of amazing coastline make Port Elizabeth a popular destination for holiday makers and a favoured choice for beach and watersport enthusiasts.
Port Elizabeth offers a diverse selection of attractions including scenic nature trails, historic heritage, magnificent wildlife, cultural experiences and countless water sport activities. The city is one of South Africa’s premier destinations for wildlife encounters, game viewing and safaris and boasts “South Africa’s BIG 7”- Whale (Southern Right, Brydes and Humpback), Great White Shark, Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Rhino and Elephant.
Museums, galleries and antique shops showcase Port Elizabeth’s diverse heritage and culture. The metro offers much live entertainment in the form of jazz and other entertainment to be found most nights. Diners are offered a wide choice of restaurants.
